Day 1: Arrival at Kabul International Airport. Transfer to hotel. Afternoon orientation: TV Hill panorama, Bird Street, Babur Gardens. Welcome dinner.
Day 2: Full day exploring Kabul: Karte Sakhi Shrine, National Museum (Bactrian Gold), Chicken Street antiques, Darul Aman Palace exterior, and a visit to a local family home. Evening briefing about the journey ahead. Overnights in Kabul.
Day 3: Early departure east toward Jalalabad (3 hours). Continue into the mountains toward Nuristan (6-7 hours). Dramatic drive along the Kunar River valley. Arrive in Parun, capital of Nuristan province. Overnight in basic local guesthouse.
Day 4: Exploration of Parun and surrounding valleys. Hike to traditional Nuristani villages with distinctive wooden architecture and irrigation systems. Meet with local elders to learn about the unique Nuristani culture, language, and history. Overnight in Parun.
Day 5: Visit to Kantiva district (1.5 hours each way). Visit a local madrassa and village, experiencing extraordinary hospitality in one of Afghanistan’s most isolated regions. Return to Parun. Overnight in Parun.
Drive back to Kabul via Jalalabad (full day journey). Stop in Jalalabad for lunch and brief city tour, noting its distinct Pashtun character and warmer climate. Return to Kabul by evening. Rest and recuperate. Overnight in Kabul.
Drive south to Ghazni (approx. 3 hours). Visit the Minarets of Ghazni, Bala Hisar citadel, and tomb of Sultan Mahmud. Explore the old city. Accommodation is basic—this is part of the authentic Afghan travel experience. Overnight in Ghazni.
Day 8: Drive to Kandahar (approx. 6 hours). Check into hotel. Evening walk in new city area of Aino Mena. Overnight in Kandahar.
Day 9: Full day Kandahar exploration: Shrine of the Cloak (exterior viewing), tomb of Ahmad Shah Durrani, Old City bazaars, Forty Steps, Arghandab Valley villages, and Dahla Dam. Overnight in Kandahar.
Early departure to Lashkargah, Helmand (approx. 3 hours). Visit the impressive arch of Bost Fort. Continue westward toward Herat—this is a very long travel day (8+ hours) through the deserts of Farah province. Overnight stop in Farah city (basic accommodation) or continue directly to Herat if possible. Overnight in Farah or Herat.
Day 11: Arrive Herat (if not arrived previous night). Visit the Friday Mosque, antique markets, and Herat Citadel. Overnight in Herat.
Day 12: Full Herat exploration: Musalla Minarets, Gawhar Shad Mausoleum, Jihad Museum, Khwaja Abdullah Ansari Shrine, hilltop sunset view, and saffron fields. Overnight in Herat.
Option A (recommended): Morning flight from Herat to Mazar-e-Sharif (via Kabul if direct not available).
Option B (expedition): 2-day overland drive via Chaghcharan and Bamyan (requires additional night).
Upon arrival in Mazar, visit the Blue Mosque at sunset—a magical experience. Overnight in Mazar-e-Sharif.
