What to Expect

  • Visas: We can send you a Letter of Invitation (LoI) from our company to help with your visa application. Though not strictly speaking a requirement for a tourist visa, most Afghan Embassies and Consulates will ask for this when you you make your application. We will also send you a copy of our Registered Licence as an Afghan Governement approved Tour Operator.
  • Tour Guide: There will be a local English-speaking guide accompanying you throughout the whole tour.
  • Accommodation: All accommodations is based on you having a private room in a standard, secure hotel or guest house. All the accomodation we use has armed 24/7 security
  • Transportation: We use our own very experienced drivers and their well-maintained vehicles, for all your transfers and road trips. They will expertly navigate the often-challenging road conditions and traffic of Afghanistan and ensure you have a safe and comfortable journey.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kabul – Gateway to Afghanistan

Welcome to Kabul! Upon arrival at Kabul International Airport, meet your guide and transfer to your hotel. After settling in, enjoy a brief orientation tour to acclimate you to Afghanistan’s vibrant capital. Visit the Karte Sakhi Shrine, an important pilgrimage site with beautiful blue domes. Continue to the Afghanistan National Museum, home to priceless artifacts including the famous Bactrian Gold collection. Conclude with a walk through the Chicken Street antique market. Welcome dinner at a traditional restaurant. Overnight in Kabul.

Day 2: Kabul's Historical Layers

Full day exploring Kabul’s diverse history. Begin at TV Hill for panoramic city views. Visit the Taliban-era flag pole for insight into recent history. Explore the beautifully restored Babur Gardens, final resting place of the first Mughal emperor. After lunch, venture into local neighborhoods, visiting families in traditional hilltop homes for tea and conversation an authentic glimpse into daily Kabul life. Evening free for personal exploration or optional cultural performance. Overnight in Kabul.

Day 3: To the Heart of the Hindu Kush – Bamyan

Morning departure for Bamyan (approx. 4 hours). The scenic drive offers stunning mountain vistas. Check into your hotel upon arrival. After lunch, begin exploration of the Bamyan Buddha niches. The sheer scale of these 6th-century monuments is breathtaking. Explore surrounding caves that served as monastic cells, many with preserved frescoes. Continue to Shahr-e Gholghola (City of Screams), the ancient citadel offering spectacular valley views. Visit local cave dwellings still inhabited today, sharing tea with a family to understand this unique lifestyle. Overnight in Bamyan.

Day 4: Band-e-Amir National Park

After breakfast, drive to Band-e-Amir National Park (approx. 1.5 hours). Spend the day exploring this geological wonder—six stunning turquoise lakes formed by natural travertine dams in the Hindu Kush. Enjoy a boat ride on Band-e-Haibat, visit local women’s jewelry and handicraft markets, and have lunch in a mountain cave restaurant. In the afternoon, visit Foladi Valley, known for its beautiful landscapes and traditional village life. Walk through a village and interact with local women in their homes (where culturally appropriate). Return to Bamyan for dinner. Overnight in Bamyan.

Day 5: The Minarets of Ghazni

Today we journey east to the historic city of Ghazni (approx. 4 hours). Once the capital of the powerful Ghaznavid Empire, Ghazni preserves remarkable Islamic architecture. Upon arrival, visit the famous Minarets of Ghazni, elegant 12th-century towers that have survived centuries. Explore the Bala Hisar citadel with its commanding views. Pay respects at the tomb of Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni, the empire’s most famous ruler. Wander through the old city before checking into your hotel. Note: Accommodation in Ghazni is basic but the best available. Overnight in Ghazni.

 

Day 6: Over the Hindu Kush to the North

Early departure for the dramatic crossing of the Hindu Kush mountains via the Salang Pass (3,878m/12,723ft). This engineering marvel includes Soviet-built tunnels and offers breathtaking alpine scenery. En route, stop at the unique Buddhist Stupa in Samangan (Takht-e-Rustam)—an unusual rock-cut monastic complex blending Buddhist and Islamic architectural elements. Continue to Mazar-e-Sharif, arriving in the evening. Check into your hotel and enjoy a well-deserved dinner. Overnight in Mazar-e-Sharif.

 

Day 7: Mazar-e-Sharif & Ancient Balkh – Departure

Morning visit to the magnificent Blue Mosque (Rawze-e-Sharif), Afghanistan’s most celebrated Islamic monument. The shrine’s brilliant blue tiles and spiritual atmosphere create an unforgettable experience. Afterwards, drive to nearby Balkh, one of the world’s oldest continually inhabited cities. Known as “Bactra” in antiquity and the “Mother of Cities,” Balkh was a major center of Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, and Islamic scholarship. Visit the traditional village believed to be the birthplace of Rumi (though he left as a child). Explore the ruins of the Green Mosque (Masjid Sabz), the 9th-century Haji Piyada Mosque (Afghanistan’s oldest), and the ancient city walls. Return to Mazar for your afternoon flight back to Kabul (approximately 1 hour). Upon arrival in Kabul, transfer directly to the airport for your international departure or to your hotel if extending your stay.
